The most expensive bot traffic usually arrives long before anyone says the site is down.
That is why so many teams underestimate it.
They look for the dramatic version of the problem: 502 errors, total outage, obvious collapse. What they get instead is a slower and more irritating pattern. CPU climbs. Admin logins feel inconsistent. Checkout gets sticky. Support messages start with "the site feels weird today" instead of "the site is dead."

A surprising number of site owners still evaluate security pressure with one question:
Is the site up?
That is not enough.
A WordPress site can stay technically reachable while carrying a lot of unwanted work:

What bot pressure usually looks like in production

Why WordPress feels the pain earlier than people expect
WordPress is not fragile. But it is easy to make it work too hard.
When traffic is repetitive and low-value, the site still pays in several places:
- PHP execution
- database reads
- uncached dynamic routes
- session or cookie handling
- plugin-side logic on request paths that should have been filtered earlier
That creates a weird zone where the site is "fine" from the outside but clearly less healthy from the inside.
For operators, this is the worst kind of issue. It is expensive enough to matter. It is vague enough to waste time.
Why WooCommerce feels this faster
WooCommerce stores have less room for useless traffic.
A content site can survive a lot of nonsense before the business notices. A store cannot. The stack already has more sensitive moving parts:
- account logins
- carts
- checkout
- search
- product pages that invite scraping

- rate limits
- challenge decisions
- path-aware WAF handling
- bot-detection signals

That framing is better because it matches what the business feels.
The bot is not expensive because of what it is. It is expensive because of the work it forces the site to do.
Why plugin-only defenses leave too much work at origin
Plugin-side controls still have value. They can help with local visibility, login hardening, and integrity signals.
They are not where I would want the first line of traffic control to live.
Once the request reaches WordPress, the site is already spending energy on it. That is the problem.
The more mature approach is to reduce noisy traffic before WordPress has to interpret it. If the edge can challenge or block the junk first, the application gets to spend more of its time on real users instead of screening cheap automation.
That also changes the operator experience. You stop reacting only to symptoms inside WordPress and start seeing the traffic pattern earlier.
What to review when a site "feels slow for no reason"
When someone says a WordPress site feels slower but there is no obvious outage, I would immediately ask:
- are login paths taking pressure
- is product or content scraping increasing
- are requests reaching origin that should have been filtered earlier
- is cache hit rate dropping because of noisy request patterns
- are support issues clustering around account, admin, or checkout behavior
This is often where the answer appears. Not as a single dramatic attack signature, but as a pile of small pressures that add up to a degraded operating state.
The better way to think about the problem
Do not ask whether the site is down.
Ask whether the origin is carrying work it should never have seen.
That is the more honest test.
When bot traffic is handled earlier, the site gets calmer. Logs get clearer. Real users get a larger share of the system. The team wastes less time guessing whether the problem is infrastructure, code, or just another scrape wave pretending to be ordinary traffic.
If a WordPress site stays online while bots quietly drain the capacity behind it, that is not a sign the problem is small. It is a sign you noticed it later than you should have.
